Shakespeare’s classic gets a daring and accomplished Indonesian football setting. Rangga, a fanatic supporter of Jakarta’s Persija Football Club, and his fellow fans ambush the fans of the Vikings, their greatest rivals from the city of Bandung. During the brawl, he sees a Viking girl whose face he cannot forget. Desi too cannot get him out of her mind. Rangga goes to Bandung, deep into enemy territory in search of her. Rangga and Desi fight to keep their forbidden love in the face of the hatred between the fans of the two opposing clubs. With Edo Borne, Sissy Prescilia and Ramon Tungka. RASINAH: THE ENCHANTED MASK

 Once one of the most popular of the Topeng artists, Rasinah, a 72-year old woman and a master of an ancient form of mask dance called Topeng Cirebon, rooted in Islamic mysticism, had been reduced to poverty as the taste for this traditional art form waned. Two young men become enraptured by tales of a hidden treasure living in a remote village and set out to find Rasinah to rescue her dance from extinction.

The film describes the Chinese-Indonesian keepers of Gambang Kromong, a form of music adapted from various ethnicities in Indonesia. The seeds of the art form, with its Chinese musical notation, date back to the 18th century . Through cross fertilization with Javanese, Sundanese, and Malay cultures, a harmonious music form emerged which is now known as a specific traditional art form from Jakarta.

This documentary follows the process of modern dancer Li Chiao-Ping as she prepares to perform the work of seven post-modern choreographers including Elizabeth Streb, Heidi Latsky, June Watanabe, Victoria Marks, Cynthia Adams, Molissa Fenley and Bebe Miller. Li immerses herself in the choreographic language of each choreographer as she learns the solos created specifically for her.

In the aftermath of Katrina, Virginia Commonwealth University Dance Majors reconstruct Shelter, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and the Urban Bush Women 1988 classic dance about the plight of the homeless in New York City.

 

6 SECONDS IN RAMALLAH

6 SECONDS IN RAMALLAH

A documentation and documentary about a dance/multimedia performance, 6 Seconds in Ramallah, presented in Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon in 2011, began when Yoshiko Chuma met Noora Baker, a dancer and choreographer from Amman in 2010. The choreographers immersed in a daily rehearsal process with 30 dancers and choreographers, as part of a three-year project. One year later, their dream blossomed in Ramallah, where artists are working side by side in the first collaborative project between several outstanding artists from The School of Hard Knocks (Japan/USA) and the El Funoun Dance Troupe (Palestine). With director-choreographer Yoshiko Chuma in person.

When Archie Burnett took dance critic and historian Sally Sommer to the Loft in 1982 she saw New York’s astonishing underground club House dancers who exist in a world that parallels other professional dancers, but working in the dark and at the edges. The film captures the club dancers bringing music to motion, as their personalities and friendship clusters creating the House vibe. “Check your body at the door so your spirit can be free.”

Inspired in part by the paintings of Giorgio de Chirico On the Trax was choreographed for the screen by Martha Curtis and brought vibrantly alive by dancer Li Chiao-Ping with music by Marty McCavitt.

Three men serve as 'conductors' on their own terms: one man is an established musician whose symphony orchestra is one of the most sought after in the region; another leads some 5,000 singers in one choir group; and the other is a football fan who guides more than 17,000 other football fans. In this gorgeous, otherworldly re-imagination of the Ramayana, village potter Setio embarks on a long journey away from home and his wife Siti’s fidelity is tested by the fiery Ludiro (a scene-stealing Eko Supriyanto, who performed with Madonna on her Drowned World tour). Nugroho envisions this romantic intrigue through a sensual mélange of gamelan melodies, acrobatic choreography and Javanese shadow puppetry. One of seven films commissioned to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, Opera Jawa is at once a requiem for victims of violence and natural disaster and a postmodern movie musical.

Set in post-colonial India of the 1950's, Cotton Mary is the story of two Anglo-Indian (part English and part Indian) sisters. The drama centers on the relationship between Cotton Mary, who dreams of realizing a British identity and Lily Macintosh, a young woman recently returned to India to live in her childhood. Dance, live music, video projections and commentary collide in this performance installation presented at Japan Society in New York in 2007 by Yoshiko Chuma and her company, The School of Hard Knocks. Inspired by Teinosuke Kinugasa's 1927 silent film A Page of Madness, the production investigates Manipur with an international cast of real and electronic performers including vocal artist Sizzle Ohtaka; pena player and balladeer M. Mangangsana; the shakuhachi trio Hannya Teikoku from Japan; and video artist Dave Thoudam. Words by Rachel Cooper and Somi Roy. With director-choreographer Yoshiko Chuma in person.

Based on M.K. Binodini Devi’s experimental ballet, Thoibi, developed from her powerful and seminal essay Thoibidu Warouhou’i that ignited environmental awareness in Manipur, Sangai, blends Manipuri folklore, ballads and environmental concern in a ballet performed by the JN Manipur Dance Academy’s Ballet Unit. The film was awarded the British Film Institute’s Outstanding Film of the Year Award in 1989.
